MINIBUSES

We have a long standing problem with booking minibuses. Much of this comes down to correct maintenance and use of the minibuses, with unreported damage building up until the minibuses have to be taken off the road and be fixed. I want to create a way that allows for proper reporting of damage in a way that does not allocate undue blame to the club but makes the union aware of damage that can be fixed at a more convenient time. I will also want to look into finding a sustainable way to expand the fleet, supporting the clubs which use the minibuses the most.

STORAGE

Be it in the west basement, lockers in union spaces or your bedroom floor, we can all agree that there is not enough club storage either on or off campus. I want to do a proper storage space review, finding out exactly how much space we have and how much is needed, and then come up with a plan on how we can maximise the efficiency of the space we currently have, whilst potentially looking to find more.

ROOMS

This year has seen the college start their space policy rewrite. I will use this as momentum to review our own room booking system. I firstly want to know everything about all usable rooms in Imperial, both in south ken and elsewhere. I then want to start the process of making a new electronic booking system, which allows students to see what rooms are available and if not provides an alternative. This will not only make the process much more open and easy for students to use but will free up staff time enabling other projects to be looked into.

MANAGEMENT: MINIBUSES, STORAGE AND ROOMS

EFFICIENCY

This year has seen the start to some massive changes in the efficiency of club support, from finance to activities. I will continue this good work, making sure that the effects are seen to affect our student volunteers for the better.
I played a key role in the incoming changes to management groups, all of which are aimed at creating a system which allows for students to do more without staff input. The creation of several new roles in each management group will allow for more input from experienced students in day to day matters, negating the need for delay whilst staff input is waited on.
Due to the input I had in creating the new system I will be in a fantastic position to oversee its birth and to aid in any issues that might occur in its opening days.

MONEY

This year has seen an injection of £40,000 into our clubs and societies, a massive feat. I want to provide our clubs with access to more money than ever before, looking for novel ways for money to get to our clubs, working with as many people as possible to find sources for money and campaigning for existing sources of money to grow.

ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS

It is wonderful to have such an accessible office space for the union staff, but it is still restricting not just to our many non-south ken based students but also to our south ken students. I want to bring the union to the students, by offering sessions out in main south ken areas and also doing trips to non-south ken campuses.

NEW ACTIVITIES

Every year a large number of imperial students apply to the union to start a new club or society, each with its own unique core activity. However, the process to do this could be improved. I will propose a new process, which involves more support for the students applying for a new club and ensure that ideas for new clubs are not hindered due to a poor application.

CLAIMS

We've all been there. Bought something for our club or society and want the money back. I want to provide a service where delays are kept to a minimum and students are aware of any delays that there might be. This will mean that students are forewarned of the delays and can prepare accordingly. I also want to make it easier for students to pay for items directly with club money rather than spending their own money and then claiming it back.

WHAT ELSE DO I WANT ?

All the other bits I want to do and achieve in my year

Whilst I have my big three points (T.O.M) there are so many other areas which contribute to the role of DPCS. Some of these I will leave as they are, others I hope to make small improvements and others I feel require drastic action.

Outlined below are some of the key factors I want to influence.

T IS FOR TRAINING

You feel you are going into your roles in a club unprepared.
I want to provide more appropriate training for any student that wants it.
The union currently provides a degree of training for our student volunteers, however many still go into roles feeling out of their depth. By revamping and updating this training I want to ensure that the training is more readily available to all and suitable for all our students to learn from.

O IS FOR OPENNESS

You feel that the Union, College and Sport Imperial too opaque.
I will ensure that all relevant information is released in a way which students are able to understand.
Even in cases where the information might be available, it is not always in an easy to find place or written in a way students can understand. Specifically, I would like to see these organisations be more open with their finances, hopefully presenting them in a way that students are able to understand.
Furthermore I would like to make it clear to students the staff members available to help them, providing a clear job description, not just a job title, so that students can be sure they are going to the right place for help. I will start this within the Clubs and Societies remit, but ideally roll this out on a much larger scale.

M IS FOR MANAGEMENT

You have long complained about minibuses, storage and room bookings.

I will review how we manage club amenities to ensure that you are able to get the maximum available.

The big three on my manifesto

WHO IS TOM?

I have been at Imperial for the last five years, during which I have committed so much time and energy to maximise the successes of clubs and societies.
I started like every other fresher, a member of a variety of clubs, unsure which I would like the most. By my fourth year I had found a club I enjoyed and became its treasurer. I learnt a lot from this role, from simple negotiation skills when making purchases to more in depth budgeting skills required to make a large club run smoothly.
This year I decided I wanted to focus on the management of more clubs, wanting more students to experience the fantastic time I have had. I have managed ICSM Clubs and Societies at a management group level, helping to fix day to day issues and encouraging the growth and success of over 50 clubs!

Now I want to do more!

I want to push for these experiences and successes to be felt by all the clubs and societies at Imperial.

Lets bring focus back to the students

Imperial College Union is proud to host the largest number of clubs and societies at a university in the UK. All 375 of them are run by an incredibly valuable volunteer base - our students - willing to commit so much to ensure their success.
I wish to have the honour of representing all of the clubs and societies, and all of the volunteers who contribute so much to their achievements to the union, to college and to the outside world.
